Do Babies Need Vitamin D3 in the Summer in Finland? What Doctors Say
Vitamin D3 is one of the most important supplements for babies during the first years of life. In Finland, many parents wonder whether it is still necessary to give vitamin D3 during the summer when days are long and there is plenty of sunlight.
Doctors in Finland are clear: yes, babies should receive vitamin D3 daily all year round, including during the summer.
Why is vitamin D3 important for babies?
- Vitamin D3 contributes to:
- Normal bone and tooth development
- Calcium and phosphorus absorption
- Prevention of rickets
- Immune system support
- During the first two years of life, the requirement is high, and the body cannot produce enough vitamin D naturally.
Why is sunlight in Finland not enough?
Even though summer days are long, there are several important limitations:
1. Geographic location
Finland is located at a high latitude, which means UVB radiation (needed for vitamin D production) is insufficient for part of the year.
2. Sun protection for babies
Babies:
- should not be exposed directly to sunlight
- are protected with clothing, hats, and shade
- use sunscreen
All of this reduces natural vitamin D3 production.
3. Diet is not enough
Breast milk and complementary feeding do not provide sufficient vitamin D for infants.
What do doctors in Finland recommend?
According to public health guidelines from the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare:
- Babies 0–2 years: approximately 10 micrograms (400 IU) of vitamin D3 daily
- Daily supplementation throughout the year
- No break during the summer season
This recommendation applies to all young children, regardless of the season.
Are there any exceptions?
In general, vitamin D3 is not discontinued during summer. However, a pediatrician may adjust the dosage in special cases, such as:
- specific medical conditions
- combined supplementation from multiple sources
- individual health recommendations
How is vitamin D3 given?
- In Finland, vitamin D for babies is usually available as:
- Oral drops (most common form)
- Given once daily
- Directly into the mouth or mixed with milk
- These products are easily available in pharmacies (apteekki).

Important for parents:
- all of them are available without a prescription
- the dosage is standardized for infants
- the pharmacist can recommend the most suitable option
